2. Diuretic foods

Diuretic foods are foods that have a high water content and that increase our frequency of urination. If we eat a lot of diuretic foods in the hours before bed, we might find that we’re up a lot in the night to visit the bathroom, which will affect our sleep quality.

Cucumbers, asparagus, beetroots, celery, citrus fruits, watermelon and cranberries are diuretic foods. They’re all also low calorie, nutrient-dense foods that form part of a healthy, balanced diet.

But if you find that you’re going to the toilet a lot during the night, it might be worth considering avoiding these foods in the evening, and having them at lunchtime instead. The same goes for water, try to drink the majority of your eight glasses a day before 8pm.
