There aren’t many people who don’t enjoy the indulgence of a chocolate bar. But as we learned in the case of fizzy drinks, sugar can affect our sleep patterns and lead to chronic lifestyle diseases, especially so, if we eat sugary foods before bedtime.

Also, chocolate naturally contains caffeine, which will disrupt our sleep patterns, leaving us feeling tired, drained of energy and sluggish the next day. As a general rule, the darker the chocolate, the higher the caffeine content.

And there’s more! Chocolate also contains the stimulant theobromine, which is why eating chocolate makes us feel good. But this is also why chocolate can keep us awake if we eat it before bed. This can be especially detrimental to sleep if we’re particularly sensitive to caffeine.
