Lunch meats may be tasty but those delicious deli style slices and cold cuts could be costing you your health, as they come loaded with a ton of harmful nitrates and preservatives. Nitrates have been associated with a higher risk of cancer, pulmonary disease, and an increased chance of neurological disorders and there’s also evidence that indicates they could negatively impact mental health.

Though it might be tempting to pick up a pack of salami or chorizo next time you walk past a deli, the proliferation of preservatives in cured meat means that it’s not a good idea for your health. Picking up a fresh cut of meat from the local butchers may mean you spend more and eat meat less frequently, but as a high meat consumption can be detrimental to your body anyway, your health will definitely thank you for it.
