13. Nutmeg

Nutmeg is often used as an addition to coffee and other treats, especially during the festive period, but this delightful spice is not always entirely risk free. When it’s consumed in large quantities, researchers at the University of Malaysia found it can act as a hallucinogen, as it contains a substance called myristicin, which is a narcotic with some unpleasant side effects.

It’s recommended not to consume more than 1 teaspoon of ground nutmeg in one sitting to avoid inducing the negative effects of myristicin – so if you’re cooking with nutmeg, or adding it to your food, always use this spice in small doses, ideally ½ a teaspoon or less.
